| The Day of Small Rants: Rant 1 [LJ Repost] |
*part of a series of posts I am cross-posting. I'm finally within the MySpace timeline, which means these posts will be dated the actual date/time they were originally posted* Rant 1: Johnny Damon - Shouldn't even bother writing this according to my own theory, but I felt like it anyways. He was being interviewed by the local news last night because he's coming back to Boston, but of course as a Yankee. My thing was "don't even interview him". My husband couldn't understand why and I'm gonna explain it here like I did to him. I haven't heard word one about him since he left. As you know the Yankees (even though I hate them as required in my Red Sox fan manual page 1) are full of big stars like Jeter and A-Rod etc. and so forth. The problem I foresee with a team that has so many "big" names.. it leaves sub-par players in the dust. Damon falls under this category. Yes he had some great moments for us, particularly the grand slam in the wild-card playoff for AL champ that sent us to the World Series.. yadda yadda yadda.. but it had been clear that some of his skill had been diminishing either from age, injury or both. We would have still liked him if he had stuck it out. But instead he decided to stroke his wallet and become a traitor (but did he even make a wise decision regarding that? more to come). So yeah basically I haven't heard much about him since he left, except some whining and how he likes it in NY but nothing about his skill as a player, and not just because I live in a state where we don't really talk about the Yankees either.. even when I went to Connecticut the "Switzerland" of the Yankees/Red Sox debate (they usually just route for whoever is winning I swear.. or it depends which state you border maybe) I didn't hear much about him, and we were getting NY news stations there. So my point is this.. the press is eventually gonna die down. NY already has at least 2 poster-boys.. the chances of Johnny getting as much publicity and offers as he did when he played here.. not so good unless he does some super amazing playing (while he is still pretty good I don't know if it is enough to take over the limelight). This brings me to my major point.. was going to NY really the best deal for the wallet or not? While yes the actual paycheck is significantly more what he gave up here was product endorsements (you couldn't change the channel after the World Series without seeing some ad with Damon in it) the book deals (where else but here could he write the novel "Idiot" certainly not in NY) film roles (what Red Sox player was featured in the Movie "Fever Pitch".. Damon) player shirts (at games Damon shirts appeared at least 30% more often than any other player) and not to mention lots of news reels and interviews (hell he couldn't even cut his hair without making the front page.. which is another issue I have entirely.. when he cut his hair here in Boston he only did it once and it was for charity.. a very nice gesture completely overshadowed now that he cut it for greed). So my point is this.. strike at his ego.. he probably would have made more money overall staying here.. but more than that he has an ego to stroke.. he was a huge star here and the best way to prove what a nobody he is now is to ignore him. So when he comes here.. don't interview him!!!!! Don't boo him either.. just make like he never existed, we don't give a shit and we are doing just fine without him. That ought to be a nice kick in the cup.. if you get my drift. |
